How You Can Help

Each Thursday morning we provide grocery bags of food without cost, no questions asked, to anyone in need. A typical week sees the distribution of approximately 900 bags to families and individuals, including seniors on fixed income and veterans who may never have asked for help before.

Volunteer to Help

There is no paid staff at Feeding Santa Fe; all work is accomplished by volunteers. These include a number of wonderful people who:

purchase the food at bulk prices,
arrange for its delivery to Feeding Santa Fe’s location,
unpack the food from pallets,
put individual items in grocery bags, or
hand out the grocery bags to individuals on Thursday mornings between 6 and 9 am.

Feeding Santa Fe is located in the front building at the Coll-Greene Angel Depot at 1222 Siler Road, Santa Fe. Entry is through the door at the rear on the left side of the warehouse.

We are always looking for volunteers. Please join us in our efforts to see that no one in the Santa Fe area goes hungry.  If you are interested, call Susan Odiseos, 603-6600.

Volunteer Opportunities

FSF-logo bulletRefer people you know who are in need, telling them about our program.
FSF-logo bulletTuesdays, during the growing season (ending in early October), at 1:15 pm pick up donated fresh produce and bring to the Feeding Santa Fe location.
FSF-logo bulletTuesdays, from 2 to 3 pm, help organize for certain bag distributions, filling bags and inserting recipes, etc.
FSF-logo bulletWednesdays from 6 to 7 am, join the group that begins the regular filling of bags with non-perishables
FSF-logo bulletThursdays from 5:45 to 9 am, participate in food distribution, for all or part of the operation.
Some people arrive to set up, add eggs, bread and produce (when available) and leave by 8 am. Others come at 7:30 to complete distribution and close up promptly by 9 am.
FSF-logo bulletOrganize a Peanut Butter Caper in your neighborhood, at work, at your school or faith community, among family members or to respond to friends coming for dinner who ask what they can bring! The Caper involves collecting 15- or 18-oz. jars (NO larger, please, so they fit in our bags) of peanut butter which replaces a canned vegetable for greater nutrition and helps our modest budget.
FSF-logo bulletPeriodic support: helping to maintain database and email distribution lists.
FSF-logo bulletPeriodic support with mailings, including newsletters.
FSF-logo bulletGrant efforts – research and writing
FSF-logo bulletPeriodic help to exhibit our program at fairs and other events.
Tasks can be “job-shared” to allow for travel and personal plans so no one feels burdened by a commitment. Form a team or join a friend and help us alleviate hunger.

While we very much appreciate the ongoing response to our Peanut Butter Caper because of the nutritional value that is added by donations of 15 or 18-oz. jars of peanut butter, there are several reasons why we do not encourage large-scale food drives:

a) we do not have the space in our warehouse to store and sort large quantities and, more importantly, and
b) financial contributions allow the dollars spent to go far further because of our bulk purchase pricing that enables the same amount spent for food donations to buy much more.

Also, our focus is on providing food that is as nutritious as possible and have a basic list of what goes into the bags each week: a dozen eggs, two large potatoes, a 1-lb. bag of rice, dried pinto beans or pasta, two cans of vegetables, bread and fresh vegetables or fruit whenever it is available. In view of the high rate of obesity and diabetes among families and individuals in Santa Fe, we do not include processed foods, or items with high fructose syrup or any sugar, fat or preservative-laden “sweets”.  We invite you to click here to see the broad rationale for financial contributions in an article entitled “Can the Cans”
